URL cleaner: remove tracking from a link

Paste a link and the URL cleaner removes its tracking parameters (utm_*, fbclid, gclid, si, igsh and others), keeping the parts the page needs to load, so you can share it clean. No sign-up.

Cleaning happens in your browser; shortening sends the link to SendURL.

Clean a link

The clean link appears as you paste, with what was removed.

What tracking parameters are

The part of a link after the ? is its query string: name=value pairs joined by &. Some pairs choose what the page shows, like YouTube's v=. Others only record how you got there: the campaign (utm_source), the ad you tapped (gclid, fbclid), the email you were sent (mc_eid, _hsenc) or the Share button that made the link (si). The cleaner removes the second kind and keeps the rest exactly as it was, #fragment included. Short names such as si, t and ref are removed only on the site known to add them, because elsewhere the page may need them.

When to remove them, and when not to

Remove them before you share a link you were sent: email IDs such as mc_eid (Mailchimp) and mkt_tok (Marketo) are made for one recipient, so a forwarded link can record other people's visits as yours. Keep them on your own campaign links: the utm_ tags are how GA4 tells your newsletter from your Instagram bio. Tag your own links instead with the UTM builder; the guide to what UTM parameters do covers each tag. If you clean a link of yours that carries an ad click ID, turn on Keep campaign tags.

Two limits. Removing parameters doesn't stop the site from measuring the visit with cookies, its own analytics or the referrer. And a short link hides its parameters until it redirects: the redirect checker shows the full address it lands on, which you can then paste here. Affiliate tags, such as Amazon's tag=, decide who is paid rather than track you, so they stay unless you add them under Also remove.

What each tracking parameter is

The 101 names and prefixes the cleaner removes. Each meaning comes from the vendor's own documentation where there is one, and otherwise from the ClearURLs rules, an open list kept for the ClearURLs browser extension. Where nobody documents what a parameter holds, the table says so. Names ending in * are prefixes.

Frequently asked questions

What is fbclid?

A Facebook click ID. Meta adds fbclid to links clicked in Facebook and Instagram so the site's Meta pixel can match the visit to the click, as Meta's ClickID documentation describes. The page doesn't need it: without it the same page opens.

What is si in a YouTube link?

A parameter YouTube adds to links made with its Share button; Spotify adds one with the same name. Neither documents what it holds, but it belongs to the share, not the video: v= (or the youtu.be path) picks the video and t= the start time, so the link plays the same without si.

What is igsh in an Instagram link?

A parameter Instagram adds to links made with its Share button (older links have igshid). Instagram doesn't document it, so we won't guess what it records; the post or reel is chosen by the path, so the link opens the same without it.

Will the link still work after cleaning?

Yes, with the default list: it only holds parameters that record a click, a share, an email or a search, and the short ones (si, t, ref) only on the site that adds them. Remove every query parameter is different: search pages, video start times and sign-in links need theirs, so open the result once before you share it.

Should I remove UTM parameters from my own links?

No. The utm_ tags are how GA4 tells your newsletter from your Instagram bio, so removing them sends those visits to the wrong channel; turn on Keep campaign tags to strip only the click IDs.
